TEN-4 Day is a day for education and awareness building on the TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule, a clinical decision rule developed and validated by Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce, Kim Kaczor and colleagues. It takes place annually on October 4th.

Mission

We are building a movement to recognize TEN-4 Day, observed on October 4th, as a dedicated day for increasing awareness of the TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule and emphasizing the importance of recognizing, reporting, and preventing child abuse.

Purpose

Strengthening connections between multidisciplinary professionals across the country by sharing resources, research, and providing technical assistance to increase awareness of the TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule.

What is TEN-4-FACESp?

TEN-4-FACESp is a useful acronym to help screen children under 4 years of age with bruising to identify when a bruise is more likely to be caused by abuse than accidental injury. TEN-4-FACESp stands for bruising to the Torso, Ears, Neck, Frenulum, Angle of the jaw, Cheeks, Eyelids or Subconjunctivae, “4” represents infants 4 months and younger with any bruise, anywhere, and “p” represents the presence of patterned bruising (“TEN-4-FACESp”).

History of TEN-4 Day

While attending a TEN-4 training in 2019, Dr. Shannon Moody (Kentucky Youth Advocates) had the idea to create an awareness campaign about the TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule on 10/4 (October 4th). TEN-4 Day officially launched in Kentucky that October and has since expanded to dozens of other states.

Organizing a TEN-4 Day in Your State

Convene a workteam. Collaborating with a multi- or interdisciplinary team of professionals can help shape ideas, share the workload, and identify insights from different perspectives.

Secure a proclamation. Proclamations are a great way to start a conversation and raise awareness about TEN-4. Governors, mayors, and numerous other elected officials can issue proclamations and many government websites provide templates that are free to use.

Host a TEN-4-FACESp Training. Or integrate information about the TEN-4-FACESp Bruising Rule into a child maltreatment-related training. Partnering with medical professionals and key child-serving organizations, and offering CEUs and hybrid/virtual options can help increase attendance.

Spread Awareness. Post about TEN-4 Day on social media, share research with colleagues, or initiate a conversation on TEN-4-FACESp with policymakers, Cabinet Secretaries, and other stakeholders in your state.

Leverage media and social media to spread the word. Live stream your TEN-4 Day events and share photos (using the hashtag #TEN4DAY2025) on social media, or notify local media outlets and have your proclamation photo enlarged to display at a TEN-4 Day press event.

Emails are sent once monthly and contain content created by the national TEN-4 Day planning team.
